The Girt Dog of the Glastonbury ZodiacWe begin our Alchemical Journey cycle of 2013-14 by dedicating a full day to the Girt Dog, the guardian of the Glastonbury Zodiac, and a representation of the constellation of Canis Major in the landscape. “The Girt Dog of Langport”, as once referred to in a Somerset wassailing carol, is one of the compelling effigies in the Glastonbury Zodiac, stretching from its nose at Burrowbridge Mump to its tail at the hamlet of Wagg.

In previous years, we have incorporated a visit to Burrowbridge Mump and Wagg into our Aries workshop, but this year we have decided to spend a full day contemplating the mysteries of canine guardianship and companionship. In the morning we will be looking at myths and traditions associated with dogs, in particular their quality of guardianship – as threshold creatures and as teachers, whose roles include facilitating a sacred journey, also guarding sacred territory. We will be exploring the significance of the Canis Major constellation in this regard. In the afternoon we will be walking part of the landscape figure and ritually asking for the Girt Dog’s blessing to enter the Zodiac – inviting his (or her) powerful protecting canine energy to accompany us on our pilgrimage around the zodiacal wheel.

This one day workshop immediately precedes our Aries workshop on Sunday and we encourage you to take the two workshops together if at all possible. The price of a one-day workshop on The Alchemical Journey is £30, but if you do both these days, it will be just £50 for the weekend.
